A little bit more about RoAnna; RoAnna Sylver writes unusually hopeful dystopian stories (and now vampire stories) about marginalized heroes actually surviving, triumphing, and rocking really hard. RoAnna is also a singer, blogger, voice actor and artist who lives with family and a small snorking dog, and probably spends too much time playing video games. The next amazing adventure RoAnna would like is a nap in a pile of bunnies.
RoAnna identifies as Queer, asexual, gray-aromantic, bigender/genderfluid, nonbinary and prefers the pronouns She/Her OR They/Them.
We sat down for an interview with this colourful character!;
1. Besides LGBT+ OwnVoices, anything else in your books OwnVoice (mental illness, physical disability, etc.)
I realized recently that I’ve never written a main character (and usually most of if not all the ensemble cast) without PTSD, and all but one are a-spec. I’m not sure I know how by now, it’s so part of my entire being! Also, writing Annie in THE LIFELINE SIGNAL and LIFE WITHIN PAROLE short stories (she’s aroace, autistic, and awesome - and also has joint hypermobility like me!) was incredible, because yeah, writing how my brain works is super important. (Riven, my cute witch in MOON-BRIGHT TIDES is also autistic but I don’t use the word. I think it’s laid out obviously though.)
Also, all my books are huge messy webs of polyamory, which absolutely includes asexual, queerplatonic and aromantic ships. Like entire-cast tangles with fascinating (I THINK!) different orientations and dynamics. I started with one and now I can’t stop. They’re like chips.
One other ownvoice aspect that’s important to me is Regan’s amnesia in CHAMELEON MOON Book 1. I know, a lot of people don’t like Amnesia Plots (justifiably so! Most of them are awful!) But I've lived it (not quite to CM's sci-fi extreme, but still), and it's a real, frightening, disorienting, overwhelming experience that I think is valid... and I don't think it's a coincidence that the terrible amnesia stories aren't ownvoice. You can really tell.
2. What is the best money you've spent as an author?
I’ve tried a few different ad services, both for free and discounted books, and had Really varying results to the point where trying to figure out why something works and something else doesn’t is A Mystery. However, one that really got my attention recently was MyLesFic, which had a relatively really cheap price ($20, iirc) and got a really good turnout. Probably because it’s more specific than general book deal sites, and... we’re all hungry for more good F/F!
Also I recently paid to have several paperbacks shipped to a neat indie bookstore (Another Read Through in Portland OR), which is incredibly exciting. Updates on that as they come!
3. Do you view writing as a "spiritual" practice?
Honestly I’d like to, but I haven’t really thought much about it. I used to be super spiritual (really joyfully pagan), but… it’s been a rough few years, and chronic illness can really kind of crush that out of you, and I’ve just been feeling empty and pointless for a long time. I’d love to get my faith back but not sure how. This is a good idea to try, though. Maybe it’ll help. I hope it does.
4. Have you ever googled yourself? Anything interesting?
Honestly not that much. My social media comes up, and books, but nothing super wild. There is another interview on the first page, though!
5. What part of life do you write most about? (Child, Teenager, Adult, etc.)
I guess you’d call them New Adult? Most of my protags tend to be 20-somethings, except for THE LIFELINE SIGNAL (Chameleon Moon Book 2) which has 3 teen mains. Whatever the age, though, they’re all queer AF.
6. You've been transported to the world of Harry Potter! What House do you want to be in? Who do you try to date (if anyone)? Is Harry your BFF or the antagonist?
Oh man… I used to love Harry Potter so much, but now I just. With everything JKR’s said and done, the warmth/glow/love is gone. (Except for Tonks. Tonks can stay.) Can I pick a different universe? How about Star Trek (DS9 is best, obviously), or Mass Effect? I love me some aliens. [I get this. You can pick Mass Effect because YES]
7. You meet your favourite author! They tell you they've read your book and LOVED it! What is your reaction?
You know one of my favorite parts about being an indie writer/active in indie circles? I’ve talked to several of my favorite authors, and a lot of them are actually my friends! And some of them do love my books, which knocks me on my butt every time! It’s the best feeling in the world.
I just tried to think of my favorite non-indie writer though, and the first who came to mind is Una McCormack, who’s written some of my favorite Star Trek books. If she loved anything I’d written, I’d... scream/die internally, but externally probably just go about my day as usual, but with a definite sense of Surreal Satisfaction.
8. You're at the club (I know we're both probably introverts but like, play along) Your favourite song comes on! What is it?
...My entire brain just went “Every Time We Touch,” which isn’t really my favorite song, but I know I WOULD lose my mind if I ever heard it in a club (which I believe most of us can say).
And my favorite song changes a lot, but right now I’m really feeling “Bulletproof Heart” (My Chemical Romance) and “The Ocean Galaktik” (Brendon Small - really the entire Galaktikon 2 album). Also Queen’s entire discography, but that really goes without saying for me. (I’ll say it anyway.
9. You're transported to your WIP! What is your relation to the MC?
That’d be DEATH MASQUERADE, my f/f vampire/witch story (same universe as STAKE SAUCE but you don't have to have read it!) and I’m definitely the dorky nerd fangirling over this super hot badass witch, and I probably like, walk right in the middle of a vampire fight or oncoming traffic and she has to save me and is like ‘not again are you serious’ but doesn’t really mind because saving people from vampires (and oncoming traffic?) is what she does, and if those people have really gay crushes on her, that’s even better.
10. Anything else the readers of this world should know about you?
Upcoming Cool Thing: I'm writing a gamebook for Choice of Games! It's interactive fiction, like a "choose your own adventure" ebook, where you control the main character. It's called DAWNFALL, and it's a portal fantasy romance involving cyberpunk space elves, magical bird people, and a super badass pirate queen I want to step on me (and you hopefully will too)! Expect updates on that!
Also, I have a Patreon! It contains a ton of bonus content (CHAMELEON MOON) and early DAWNFALL access. It’s also the most direct/best way to support me as a creator, ad I appreciate every pledge so much!
Lastly, I have a Redbubble and Teepublic, where you can get my Chameleon Moon/Stake Sauce art on objects and clothing for meatspace!
